The Photographer from Leipzig spent most of the pandemic on the road, covering around 9000 kilometers between the end of March and June to find out how people from different social classes, ages and areas were adapting to these new circumstances. On his journey, he met his 80-year-old grandmother, a pastor, musicians, lovers and many more. We talked to him on the phone while he was preparing his next documentary project. The series „Measure and Middle" has brought the 25-year-old worldwide attention.”
“I was interested in the topic because it is about a situation that somehow affects or has affected everyone equally. I think it was also important for me to make my small contribution to this and to document it.
But I have to admit I thought for a very long time whether I should go because I was afraid that many photographers would want to photograph the same thing. After Angela Merkel's speech though, I realized that what is happening globally at the moment is something historical. I wanted to capture that from my perspective.
In hindsight, of course, many photographers have worked with COVID, but I think few have been as consistent and traveled across a country to create a portrait as diverse as I ultimately did.''
''I read a lot of local newspapers, all over Germany, and also followed the media coverage. I also had a lot of people who were familiar with what I was doing and who kept me informed when something significant happened somewhere. I was more or less supported by many areas of the country.
In addition, I chose certain topics in advance that I wanted to be covered. I was curious to discover what it looks like at the German borders, how the cultural offer works during Corona times, what it looks like at a COVID intensive care unit, and what ways people find to deal with such a new situa-tion. I have travelled the country with these kind of questions.''
