Film, photos and text by Alex Schuchmann

Fusing the tradition of still life with a bold, contemporary palette, French-born artist Johanna Dumet (b. 1991) transforms everyday objects—fruit, fashion accessories, tablescapes—into exuberant, whimsical canvases that pulse with humor and color. Based in Berlin and self-taught, she embraces the luxury of creative freedom, channeling her background in fashion design into expressive oil paintings that feel both joyful and thoughtfully constructed.

Her recent exhibition Fool for a Lifetime at König Galerie brought her firmly into our view, and we used that momentum of curiosity to spend time with her—two hours in her studio that became a 15-minute film. Together we traced her path as an artist, exploring what it means to build a career, sustain a practice and carve out your own space in the art world.

Only 20 copies of Episode 2 left.

Time’s running out to complete the first full season of Hometown Journal.
Pre-order Episode 4 as a full season set and become one of only 100 people worldwide to own all four chapters.

Each episode is limited to 800 copies—no reprints, no restocks. Once they’re gone, they’re gone for good.

One visit to the painter’s studio was not enough. Six months later we returned, drawn by the quiet force of Vera’s work—paintings that left me speechless the first time around.
