Marisol Mendez
Photographer of Episode 4
Marisol is among a select group of artists who are creating and redefining that image on the global stage. Through research-led and self-initiated projects, she blends a fashion photography background with photojournalism. The result: a striking collection of nuanced, dreamlike stills. These images combine portraiture, landscapes and archival elements, each layered with expressive narratives of societal and political significance. What drives this mixture, the political with ethereal?
Her path into photojournalism began with a course guided by a former National Geographic photography mentor. Then, following the loss of her father, she moved to London in 2016 to seek a fresh start, pursuing a Master's at the London College of Fashion, where her eye for fashion photography was honed. The contrast between two continents – and disciplines – would become the starting point for “Madre”.

“One of the recurring themes is the absence of fathers. Fathers are either literally not there or are present, but as figures of intimidation rather than nurturing. So what I’m finding is the prevalence of this idea of absence – absent fathers and absent figures. This ties into two major concepts I'm exploring: corruption and absence.”
“I wanted to show that womanhood is not A or B, it's actually everything in between. "
I'm trying to connect with the world you know? I just I want to look for meaning in everything.
