Film, edit and text by Alex Schuchmann

Happy New Year, everyone. We return with a new film, recently shot in Porto, in the company of Brazilian painter Vinicius Lopes. Born in Bahia and shaped by formative years in Paris, immersed in graphic design and street art, Vinicius now lives and works in Portugal, where his practice continues to unfold with quiet intensity. We meet him in the same studio that once held our conversation with Vera Matias—a familiar space that immediately felt like home.

Vinicius and I met on an early November afternoon, as I passed through Porto for the weekend. When I arrived at his studio, we quickly realized that speaking only in English wouldn’t fully carry the spirit of his process. So Vinicius spoke to the camera in Portuguese, and afterward translated his words into simple English for me. An exchange that reminded me that language is only one way we communicate what we feel, make, and believe. As I stood with his work, listening to a language I don’t truly speak, I noticed that understanding suddenly felt less important. His paintings seemed to speak on their own. They carried an invitation—to pause and to transcend. The works were not still; they felt in motion, in a state of becoming. And to me, that is what meaningful art does. It continues to move long after the paint has dried. We spent only a few hours together, just enough time for the piece he was working on to reach completion. Still, I believe the film holds something essential—a gentle reminder of what abstract art can be. We invite you to lean back, and enjoy: A Day in the studio with Vinicius Lopes
